When the Forecast Changed, The Barn Didn’t Miss a Beat - A Beautiful Rainy Wedding Day

At The Barn, we believe a well-planned wedding day should feel calm, supported, and thoughtfully prepared, no matter what the forecast brings. We take this approach from the very first tour because we know that weather can be one of the biggest sources of stress during the planning process. In Kansas, conditions can change quickly and unpredictably, even during months you expect everything to cooperate, and your Plan A may need to shift. Our goal is to ensure that possibility never feels overwhelming.
Our team is always ready with a seamless indoor plan and the flexibility to adjust without added stress. From early planning conversations to day-of coordination, we focus on eliminating as much uncertainty as possible so our couples can feel confident, present, and at ease. More times than not, we hear our couples say they were actually excited to move there ceremony indoors. From a venue perspective, that statement alone, feels like one of our biggest successes. That’s how Mickenzie felt, and we wanted you to hear straight from her! We asked Mickenzie to share her perspective as her and Austin’s wedding day arrived with rain in the forecast, how everything came together, and what ultimately made their day so meaningful.
Q: What did the days leading up to your wedding feel like, and how did you handle the anticipation and unpredictable Kansas weather?
“The days leading up to our wedding felt both like the longest days of our lives but also came up so fast! I think I wore out the poor weather app with the amount of times I would check the weather every day (maybe even every hour some days..) in the week leading up to the day haha! Hoping the rain chances would go away, but they never did. We decided to just make the most of the rain and fully embrace it! It also was a huge relief that The Barn had beautiful spaces inside or outside for the ceremony, thank gosh! The funny thing is one of the easiest decisions my now husband and I made while wedding planning was that we both wanted outdoor ceremonies. But the indoor set up of The Barn made me think twice about doing an indoor one because it is so gorgeous. So when we had to change plans and move the ceremony inside, I was actually very excited. We had already discussed back up plans of moving indoors with The Barn staff so when we had to resort to those, it was seamless and easy!”
Q: How did everything come together on the big day, and what was it like to see your ideas come to life?
“I think one of the more stressful things for me was figuring out table decor for some reason! Trying to figure out what my vision is and how much of each item we need without spending a crazy amount of money at the same time. We took the DIY path for decor and that definitely helped the budget, but oh my gosh it took soo much time - but it was worth it because we made memories doing those DIYs together. We also made great use of The Barn’s décor closet, which was such a huge help! They had so many beautiful pieces available, and being able to visit a few months before the wedding to test out table setups was incredibly useful. It helped everything come together perfectly and gave us peace of mind leading up to the big day. Our Day of Coordinator hired through The Barn, Jessica, arranged all the decor beautifully and exactly like I had envisioned, even with a lot of last minute changes with the weather.”
Q: What did you learn from the experience, and what were your favorite moments?
"What we learned through this experience is that your event will be whatever you make it, and the people/vendors you surround yourself with will be something you remember forever. I’ll admit I was quite upset seeing rain and clouds all wedding weekend, but I changed my perspective and instead thought “it will be a nice cozy day” or “these pictures are going to turn out so unique and stunning”. And those were both true - My hair and makeup didn’t exactly love the drizzle, but running out to take couples pictures in the rain ended up being one of our favorite memories of the night. The photos turned out absolutely breathtaking (thanks to Alex Bo!!). And honestly once all of our people and guests started arriving we forgot all about the rain because the things that truly mattered to us were right in front of us, in the building with us.”
Q: How did The Barn and our team help relieve stress and make the day run smoothly, especially with last-minute changes?
“The Barn was a HUGE reason why our wedding day was a lot less stressful than I would have ever imagined, even with rain!!! The Day of Coordinator, Jessica, was an absolute lifesaver! Right after we met with her about a month before the wedding, we both got to the car and felt a huge weight lifted off our shoulders. She had great recommendations to make our day go smooth and helped coordinate with all of the vendors. She really made us feel comfortable and confident in her abilities. The overall level of detail the staff of The Barn went through with us or made available to us made us so grateful we picked them! They really made us feel overly prepared and supported for any visions we had. Every single person was extremely nice and easy to work with and felt so genuine. One of the many comments we got from guests after the wedding was how beautiful and how well run the venue was. We would pick this venue again in a heartbeat!!
The song “Ironic” by Alanis Morissette will forever have a different meaning for my husband and I in the best way possible.”
We can’t thank Mickenzie enough for taking the time to share her reflections to encourage future couples.
Hearing Mickenzie’s story reminds us why thoughtful planning, flexibility, and support are at the heart of everything we do at The Barn to help every couple feel confident, present, and able to enjoy their day, no matter the forecast.
